Pablo Genovés

Memoria colectiva, 2014

Digigraphie sobre papel baritado
35 × 51 1/5 in
89 × 130 cm
Pablo Genovés
Spanish, b. 1959
Follow

In his dramatic, mostly black-and-white photographs, Pablo Genovés fuses the analog and the digital, the serene and the apocalyptic, the cultural and the natural. He finds vintage images of ornate, classical European interiors—libraries, performance halls, and churches—and, using Photoshop, inserts scenes of climatic disaster, especially massive floods. His work suggests that these spaces of Western power and knowledge cannot survive the invasion of violent natural forces. “I play with many images simultaneously and let them become intermingled as if they were their own beings,” Genovés has said. The artist cites the photographers Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, and Robert Mapplethorpe among his influences.
