Paul Binnie, ‘Phoenix Dream’, 2006, Scholten Japanese Art

This drawing is a near-finished study for the 2006 oversized print, Phoenix Dream, a commissioned work for which the artist produced a (painfully) small edition of twenty, none of which were offered on the open market. The woman is a model Binnie worked with for several compositions at the time, including the Kiyonaga's Pipe design from the Hundred Shades of Ink of Edo series, and the phoenix tattoo was partly inspired by a tattoo on the body of the individual who commissioned the print. In response to subsequent enthusiasm for the otherwise unobtainable 2006 print, Binnie revisited the composition in 2009 with two new prints with differing palettes and details, the partial nude Lingering Dreams, and the same figure with the tattoo, Phoenix.
