Paul Clipson, ‘REEL’, 2014, San Francisco Cinematheque: Benefit Auction 2016

Paul Clipson’s process is primarily intuitive; drawing forth aspects of memory, dreams, and the quotidian in his video works. Using multiple exposures and macro imagery to create unexpected visuals, Paul Clipson reveals an ethereal atmosphere just below the surface. REEL captures a blur in time, separated and juxtaposed into vignettes, each recalling an individual vertical narrative, but coalescing into a larger representation - a figurative, abstract environment. Clipson has collaborated with a number of musical artists, most notably the musician Grouper, with whom he toured the world. He has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Institute of Modern Art, Australia.
