Despite Obstacles, African Countries Shine at the Venice Biennale
Born in Kenya in 1980, Paul Onditi moved to Germany in 2000, studied art at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main and in 2010, returned to Nairobi. His paintings explore richly layered images and contemporary global issues through highly experimental, labor intensive techniques with filmstrips, prints, transferred images, pared down layers of pigment, caustic acid and thin layers of oil paint. His works, mainly executed on digital polyester inkjet plate, blur an ever-present isolated and enigmatic figure into disparate, exploratory backgrounds. Onditi has exhibited in Kenya, Germany and Europe. He was is in Bonham’s Africa Now Auction in 2013 and 2014, and the Contemporary East African art auction in 2013. He was in the Ernst and Young Action at Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany and had a solo show in VOLTA, New York in 2016.
