A member of the Casa 7 group, which sought to revitalize Brazilian painting, Paulo Monteiro produces paintings, drawings, and sculptures marked by minimal, expressive gestures. Looking to Neo-Expressionists like Markus Lüpertz, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning for reference, Monteiro understands his cohesive artworks as being wholes, rather than the sum of their parts. His background as a comic strip artist lends his work a graphic element that is particularly evident in his drawings from the late 1980s. In these works, deconstructed figures are reduced to recognizable essences through the artist’s reflexive, action-driven lines. Monteiro’s sculptures also showcase the transformative power of gesture; composed by displacing handfuls of matter, they appear as shapes that seem to swell, resembling half-formed faces or masks.
