PHUMZILE KHANYILE, ‘Plastic Crowns’, 2016, Afronova

Society is set up in a way that one shoe should fit all and anything that you customize for yourself will be accompanied by fear and resistance, be it defining your own sexuality or defining who you are.

Plastic Crowns is where she looked at how being raised by just females has influenced the way she looks at womanhood and relationships with society and the opposite sex. The project looks at her interpretation of past memories and how they altered her current reality.

She is looking at whether stereotypical ideas on gender and sexual preference stigmas still have relevance in today’s society responding to what she has seen on television and in the environments she inhabits.
