Pierre Knop’s narratively rich paintings invoke the painterly energy of the Expressionists and Neo-Expressionists, with an approach to figures and landscapes recalling the sensibilities of Edvard Munch and Francis Bacon, among others. Born in France and raised in Germany, Knop attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under Katharina Grosse and Andreas Schulze. Knop’s paintings are rife with references to art history, and within them the artist addresses a wide range of topics, from the sociopolitical to the humorous and quotidian. His work has been shown at galleries around the world, including Anat Ebgi in Los Angeles, Choi&Lager in Cologne and Seoul, and Lyles & King in New York.
