Pieter Bruegel the Elder, one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age, made sweeping, busy landscapes and scenes of peasants’ daily lives—compositions that came to be called “genre painting.” Bruegel’s revolutionary paintings, prints, and drawings all eschewed the established portraiture and still-life traditions of his time. Bruegel’s influence in style and subject matter was staggering, and his practice helped make rustic life an acceptable motif throughout serious fine art. His work belongs in institutional collections around the world, including the Frick Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Louvre.
