Polly Borland, ‘The Queen (Mr. Pink)’, 2017, NINO MIER GALLERY

About Polly Borland

Polly Borland is famous for her experimental, stylized, and occasionally unsettling portrait photographs. Borland’s subjects have ranged from Cate Blanchett to Queen Elizabeth II to musician Nick Cave, whom she has been documenting for 35 years. Borland, who draws inspiration from Diane Arbus, carefully directs the costumes, makeup, and poses of her models, creating scenes that are intimate and dysmorphic. Of the photographer Cave has said, “Polly seems to me to be shooting into a distorted mirror and simply bringing back heartbreaking refracted images of herself.”
