About Rana Javadi
Through her roles as an artist and advocate, Rana Javadi is a major force in promoting photography in Iran. Born and based in Tehran, Javadi takes images and objects from across history and combines them into photographic collages. In the series “When You Were Dying” (2008), Javadi layered 20th-century photographs by the acclaimed Iranian photographer Bahram Chehrenegar with dried flowers, fabrics, and other traces of contemporary life. “By creating this new layered picture, the present moment dies too, but in a way that starts another life in a new form,” Javadi has said of the series. In addition to her artistic practice, Javadi is the director of Photo and Pictorial Studies at the Cultural Research Bureau in Tehran, which promotes the research and publishing of photography in Iran.
