Often celebrated as the “Father of Industrial Design,” Raymond Loewy created some of America’s most iconic designs for everything from cars and refrigerators to cigarette packages and soda vending machines. In the process, he forged our modern-day relationship with consumer goods. Loewy introduced the concept of styling—updating the look of a product without integrally altering the design—as a means of whetting consumer appetite. He often achieved this effect by “streamlining,” eliminating corners and edges in favor of soft curves that evoke aerodynamics, speed, and futurism.
