"This is Mount Kilimanjaro!"

Sharifa Issa laughs, gesturing to the pile of student books that she will mark this afternoon now that her students have gone home. Ms. Issa, who teaches English, gathers with three other teachers in their office overlooking the daily student assembly on the green to grade the assignments of the day. They leave school around 4pm and arrive at 6am each day.

"I decided to teach because I love the kids. I have four of my own so it is hard to care for so many. When I go home I cook for them. But you manage. After seven years [of teaching], somehow you cope with the work"
