About Rebecca Farr

In Rebecca Farr’s mixed-media paintings, collaged bits of pop-cultural photography, appended to panels, are painted over in thick, expressionist brushmarks of icy gray and smoggy yellow pigment. A common theme in her work is humanity’s encounter with the sublimity of nature and the legacy of Manifest Destiny. “The birth of westward migration is a story of cultivation,” Farr writes. “Sifting dualities is essential: self and other, saved and savage, Heaven and Earth.” Her work recalls artists like Frederic Remington, but rather than depicting transcendent landscapes, her representation of the natural world is often consuming, even unsettling. Her figures appear immersed in large, turbulent landscapes—cloaked in dense fog or mired in storm clouds.
