Rebecca Warren, ‘Log Lady’, 2003, Galerie Max Hetzler

About Rebecca Warren

Rebecca Warren takes the classical female nude and reinvents it in her wildly expressive sculptures of female figures with large protruding buttocks and erect nipples, posed in cartoonishly provocative ways. These anatomically exaggerated, headless forms—varying from plainly figurative to semi-abstract—announce themselves as ciphers for male fantasy and engage a number of the artist’s predecessors, from Edgar Degas to R. Crumb. By leaving her clay works unfinished, Warren imbues her rough-hewn sculptures with a sense of dynamism and spontaneity.
