Best known for her explorations of space through optical illusions and geometric constructions, and her surreal printed cutouts of figures with distorted shadows, conceptual artist Regina Silveira has also experimented with video and produced work in embroidery, plastic, porcelain, silkscreen, and wood. Though her practice is diverse, Silveira typically begins her process with drawing and printmaking, and her work is frequently concerned with skiagraphia (the study of shadows), such as Enigma 3 (1981), a photogram of a telephone intersected by the elongated shadow of a fork. In other work she has used depictions of insects as metaphors for the infestation of political corruption in her native Brazil. Silveira studied with the expressionist painter Iberê Camargo.
