About René Herbst

Most known for his work with the modern movement and Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), French designer René Herbst began his prolific career as a furniture designer and interior decorator in Paris. There he founded a manufacturing company Établissements René Herbst to produce the revolutionary and functional pieces of furniture he designed. His radical “Chaise Sandows” furniture made of nickel-plated tubular steel and rubber strips, stretched taut and fastened by hooks to the back of the seat, epitomized Modernism in its fusion of form and function.
