Renée Green creates layered and formally complex multimedia installations through which she explores perceptions of time, what survives in public and private memory, and questions related to aesthetics and culture. In her work Mise-en-Scène: Commemorative Toile (1992–94), Green combines rustic scenes of 18th-century life with violent remembrances of enslavement and lynchings. She uses upholstery fabric from the period to create installations reminiscent of museum period rooms, crafting chairs, wallpaper and lampshades. According to art historian Alexander Alberro, a “methodology of citation” can be found throughout Green’s works; the artist’s projects disclose her process of discovering and recovering sources. Green’s work has been exhibited in many eminent institutions, including the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, UCLA’s Hammer Museum, and the Whitney Museum of Art in New York.
