R.G. Smith’s McDonnell Douglas Aircraft oil painting depicts an aerial view of an in-flight United Airlines DC-9 aircraft. Cloth-matted and framed, the 45.5-by-33.75-inch canvas is signed in grey on the lower-right corner and bears an ownership label on the verso attributed to William Losch.
The piece demonstrates the artist’s exceptional ability to depict a plane in flight and betrays his familiarity and skill with the sky and clouds—not for nothing was he known as the “old master of the sky.” Completed in the fall of 1963, the oil was painted for, and presented to, the president of United Airlines.
