About Ricardo Brey

Ricardo Brey’s work defies categorization. The artist, who was born in Cuba and now splits his time between his native country and Belgium, says he prefers to “react organically to the prevailing mood” rather than work within a defined set of themes. In his assemblages and collections of everyday objects—including crash helmets and crystals, lead and pearls—he exhibits a strong, intuitive grasp of mythology and history. Brey focuses on the collision of cultures and mediums; a recent retrospective featured photographs and drawings in addition to the artist’s installation work. “To limit my work . . . to the expression of a specific reality acts against the possibility of liberation,” the artist has said.

Cuban, b. 1955, Cuba, based in Ghent, Belgium
