Richard Patterson, ‘Modern Love’, 2017, Timothy Taylor

About Richard Patterson

Merging a multitude of artistic styles, Richard Patterson creates complex, layered paintings, prints, and sculptures, which he classifies as “hyperabstraction.” He paints from pop culture references such as photographs, magazines, and film, and layers his works with collage and acetate. Patterson depicts a wide range of subjects including porn stars, toy figurines, cartoon animals, and himself. The works appear sensuous and familiar, yet also jarring and hallucinogenic, featuring bold hues and fragmented imagery. Although he considers himself to be a part of the contemporary postmodern condition, the artist also criticizes it, meditating on the relationship between representation and meaning.
