Rita Ackermann first achieved recognition for her depictions of almond-eyed girls idling in states of undress, a Gauguin-like take on New York's 1990s downtown culture. Ackermann's paintings, drawings, and collages combine Neo-Expressionism with figure drawing, deploying ballpoint ink and spray paint atop oil and acrylic to yield congested, luridly colored surfaces. Ackermann's 2008 series "Don't Give Me Salad (Nurses)" references Richard Prince's well-known paintings, but with her own pulp novel take on females straddling fragility and violence.
