About the work
Rob Carter
British, b. 1976
Follow

British-born and Brooklyn-based, Rob Carter uses photography, stop-motion animation, and time-lapse video techniques to document architectural change. Buildings rise, fall, and disintegrate; urban landscapes are gentrified; panoramas slowly shift. For one recent exhibition in New York City, Carter built replicas of Charles Darwin’s house, Henry David Thoreau’s cabin, and Sir John Bennet Lawes’ manor and allowed them to gradually—over the course of ten weeks—be taken over by vegetation. Carter frequently incorporates plants in his works to suggest the unstoppable power that nature has over civilization.
