About Rob Reasoner
Building from his background in music theory, Rob Reasoner’s hard-edge abstract paintings feature symphonic optical arrangements. The Houston-based painter layers vivid hues into thin, parallel bands of color. His compositions stem from an affection for the Romantic composers—among them Chopin and Beethoven—who relied on a chromatic scale for their musical arrangements. Extending this theoretical impulse to paintings, Reasoner’s stripes are positioned in logical sequences. Although the logic might not be explicit, the individual colors converge to create rich optical effects in the same way that the sounds of various instruments join together in one symphony. Reasoner prefers to focus on the overall effect rather than the theory: “The rules aren’t important... for me, it’s purely about the color,” he has said.
