Self-taught photographer Robert Canali creates photographs that highlight the physical and chemical properties of illumination and encourage new ways of understanding color. Beams of refracted light form the basis of his artworks, which expand upon studies of luminosity by artists like Caravaggio, Dan Flavin, and Henri Matisse. By adding pigments to photographs, Canali exposes underlying light effects and the full color spectrum, revealing both the presence and absence of light in his works. His series “In Dust,” for example, includes photographs that possess hazy, pastel hues and one black-and-white image. The single black-and-white photo in the otherwise colorful series serves as an index that the viewer can reference to further understand the transformative powers and subjective qualities of light.
