Robert Langham III, ‘Puzzle Tornado’, 2016, Foto Relevance

Series: The Tornado or Twister images are part of Langham's "Magic and Logic" Series. “Magic & Logic” images are created using traditional film and dark room processes without the use of digital media or computer editing. This work extends “still life” imagery firmly onto photographic ground. Langham’s work is a kinetic still life which he defines as an image of an event more than an arrangement. For many photographers, a still life is viewed as a traditional subject matter influenced by painterly traditions. His work is an “active” still life. In a Langham “still life”, the subjects exhibit burning, melting, blooming, wilting, balancing and other actions made visual. Indeed, some images cannot be seen until multiple exposures are complete. This is why his images claim a type of still life image that must be rendered by camera.
