Robin Philipson, ‘Towards The Night’, 1970, The Scottish Gallery

The nude in an interior is one of Philipson’s richest themes. The subjects range from exotic figures and lovers, to the languor of the bordellos. Although Philipson had a commitment to challenging subject matter, this was always offset by his dedication to the decorative demands of each painting, a sufficient subject in itself. This year a new monograph of the artist will be published, written by Dr. Elizabeth Cumming.
