Humility and Simplicity: Roger Ackling’s Calling Card
Sculptor Roger Ackling made all of his work by the same method—burning marks onto found wooden objects and scraps by focusing sunlight through a magnifying glass. For Ackling, the method combined the monumentality and infinity of outer space with the intimacy of small-scale objects and alterations: Every mark documents the interaction of a ray of light that has traveled millions of miles with a discarded object that exists on the periphery of everyday experience. Ackling also curated his own exhibitions, transforming his sculptures into large-scale installations and interventions.
