Ron Arad, ‘Big Easy, Volume 2 (1:5 Scale Model)’, 1996, The Modern Archive

Designed in 1988. 1:5 scale Limited Edition by the Vitra Design Museum from 1996. Series includes 4 works (Little Beaver by Frank Gehry, Big Easy by Ron Arad, Poltrona di Proust, and Lassu' by Alessandro Mendini). Very good condition. A matte finish with the look of a hand cast aluminum work.
The Big Easy is one of Arad's best known designs. First produced as a full size chair in steel in the early 80's from Arad's One Off studio, later offered in an edition, then manufactured by Moroso in both an upholstered and polyethylene version and then immortalized in this 1:5 scale limited edition by the Vitra Design Museum. Presented in wooden crate.

Series: Edition originally planned for 1000 but less than 250 were ever made.

Signature: Signature R. Arad stamped in bottom of chair.

About Ron Arad

Though associated with high-tech design, Ron Arad’s multi-decade career goes back to pre-digital days. Some of his earliest pieces, like hand-wrought chairs, are obviously handcrafted and retain all the traces of small-scale production. Often working in steel, Arad now capitalizes on new technology—remote controlling his own designs and fabricating Bluetooth-enabled furniture. In 2005, he designed crystal chandeliers for Swarovski that display text messages in LED lights. Arad is responsible for, among other spaces, the technology floor at Selfridge’s in London and a Yohji Yamamoto boutique in Tokyo. “Boredom,” says Arad, “is the mother of creativity.”
