About Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec
Collaborators at their design firm since 1999, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec create work that ranges from small objects to quasi-architectural projects, and which is dedicated to engineering simple solutions to the organization and design of space. The brothers eschew trends in their work, privileging function; familiar, usable forms; and clean designs. “We are not at all the designers of the future…We’re not especially keen on putting people into something that they don’t know at all,” Erwan has said. Their straightforward approach often masks the complexity and willingness to experiment underlying their designs, which is more apparent in projects that are almost sculptural, like the Algue for Vitra—leaf-like plastic elements that can be linked to form web-like functional or nonfunctional structures to the user’s liking.
