A Nigerian-born Artist Meditates on Displacement and Longing in “Salt Water”
In her mixed-media drawings, ruby onyinyechi amanze, who was born in Nigeria, grew up in the United Kingdom, and now lives in Brooklyn, meditates on hybridity and displacement. The artist creates nonlinear narratives in her drawings, imagining alien beings inhabiting foreign landscapes. amanze is invested in the cross-cultural communicative power of drawing. “The medium is classic. It's universal. It's as old as time, older even than written language. But at the same time, it's constantly reinventing itself and doing away with former parameters of what it could or could not be,” she has said. In addition to her artistic practice, amanze has studied drawing in contemporary Nigeria and curated an exhibition on the subject.
