Ryan Cronin, ‘Art Pants, You Don't Have To Be An Artist To Look Like One’, 2008, Cronin Contemporary, Art & Design

A visually arresting and minimally intricate work, Art Pants presents strong angles and pays keen attention to line and spatial tensions. The dynamic energy between the red stripe and the two sections of the spliced leg are stimulating and the shape of the negative space is almost reminiscent of Matisse’s famous cut-out works. The strong booted shoe and belt, coupled with the powerful stance offer a machismo form of assured weight. The bold use of black set against the starkly white background draws attention to both the positive and negative spaces— which are equally balanced and captivating.
