The text of two plays written by Johann Wolfgang Goethe (from 1808 and 1832) tells the story of Faust, a character inspired by Johann Georg Faust, a 16th century German alchemist, already a hero of a folk tale.
Goethe stated that the first part of Faust was the work of "a being troubled by passion, which can obscure the spirit of man." The second part reveals a world less subject to passion. In Faust II, Goethe wrote a Prologue that poses the obsessing question of the salvation of the soul. The work is thus a parable of suffering humanity, torn between thought and action.
