Le Tricorne (The Three-Cornered Hat) is a charming, humorous story about amorous exploits and mistaken identity set in late eighteenth century Spain.

Le Tricorne suite consists of twenty wood engravings created by Dali for the edition of Pedro A. de Alarcon’s story. Dali’s illustrations for Le Tricorne find a balance between the beautiful and the morbid.

Here, the artist represents the villainous Mayor Don Eugenio who wears the three-colored hat, which becomes his symbol in the story. Butterflies are symbol of beauty and metamorphosis.
