About the work
Sam Gibbons
American, b. 1980
Follow

Sam Gibbons’s colorful painted cartoons explore dark themes, subverting the notions of innocence and moral value in children’s entertainment. Painting onto wood or MDF panels with custom-cut outer edges, Gibbons depicts contorted characters that engage in depraved acts of sex and violence, some of which make unsettling reference to the murders of the serial killer Charles Manson. Gibbons frequently paints symmetrical imagery, of which he has said, “The mirroring of the sides puts all that chaos into a structure and the painting almost becomes about shape and pattern rather than content.”
