Sandra Vásquez de la Horra's art explores themes of violence, persecution, and sexual abjection. Drawing from religion, superstition, myth, and her experience of Chile's Pinochet dictatorship, the artist renders crude human and beast-like figures in pencil on paper and then immerses the sheet in molten beeswax to achieve a timeless patina. Often including words written in Spanish, English, German, or a mixture, Vásquez de la Horra's mysterious and intimate works suggest the influence of Surrealism, Dada, and Francisco de Goya's phantasmagoria (stemming from a type of “magic lantern” show, in which images of skeletons, demons, and ghosts were projected on to walls).
