Sanghyeok Lee, ‘Nº 28 “Useful Chair”’, 2015, Chamber

“Useful Chair” suggests scaffolding, a comment on the temporary, transitory nature of being an artist in a foreign country, somewhat displaced and overlooked, yet a necessary element in building sites, while the physical design of the chair focuses on three-dimensionality—its angles, viewpoints and how the user relates to the chair amongst its spatial surroundings.

The collection uses oak wood that possesses naturally occurring acid within its fibers. Lee employs a treatment process called “smoking” that leaves the wood colored in several variations and fastened together with shining brass joinery to create an overall aesthetic harmony.
