Sanna Kannisto’s photographic works explore the intersection between nature, science and art. Her works are a study of different methods, approaches as well as theories in how humankind interacts with our natural environment. Throughout her numerous travels Kannisto moves between her subjects like a visual researcher who gathers, borrows and applies different methods from the natural sciences, resembling a taxonomical approach, which she then juxtaposes with the traditions used in creating still life paintings. Due to her interest in mankind’s desire to control nature, Kannisto sees herself in the role of a collector, adding one species to another in order to complement her own compilation. Her aesthetic pleasure meets with her scientific curiosity, blending together to find a neutral balance that enables her to form a photographic world of her own characters. Kannisto detaches her protagonists of choice from their natural habitat by staging them in front of a white or black background, controlling the parameters of how she photographs them. Calculating the unsuspected through preparation and foresight lends Kannisto the ability to capture the magic of the unpredictable: “My own photography is capturing nature. Nature is total, uncontrolled and on the other hand perfect, affecting all the senses.”
