This is a wonderful example of the energetic and gestural painting of Scott Pattinson. Courage is a necessary but insufficient attribute for an artist to create an evolving body of compelling work. Technical skill, discipline, the elusive ability to distill experience and channel energy into an expression that listens and speaks in an original voice without timidity...and this is where Pattinson is with his painting today. Described variously by critics as exuberant, sizzling, deft, and edgy, he is no long emerging. His brush strokes have the sort of muscular energy that, were he a dancer, would cause people to swoon. Riotous collisions of color and forceful insertions of white space do not merely reflect the concentrated vortex of energy that comes from periods of silence - these paintings create a place where the viewer, if they give themselves the time, can experience the energy. Pattinson studied architecture and urban design at Oxford University and the University of Toronto. Both disciplines inform his dynamic, structural abstract painting. Since 2005, Pattinson has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries across Canada, including a 2014 retrospective at Gallery Stratford. He is represented by the Oeno Gallery.
