Senkichiro Nasaka is a painter and multimedia artist best known for his affiliation with the Gutai Art Group in the 1960s. Nasaka studied traditional Japanese painting at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, where his classmate was Kazuo Shiraga. In 1963, Nasaka changed his emphasis to a Western-style approach of painting, and formally joined Gutai in 1965. At the beginning of his affiliation, his style was more influenced by Art Informel, but he would come to infuse his art with technology in the form of kinetic art and light art. Though his mediums varied widely, Nasaka’s work can be characterized by his recurring motifs of wave-like forms, whether in hard-edge paintings, large-scale pipe installations, or even sound art.
