Cocaine, Champagne, The Grim Reaper, and More at V1 Gallery’s CHART Fair Booth
Shane Bradford is best known for his “dipping method,” in which he immerses various objects, most notably books, household products, and toys, in multi-colored emulsions of paint. He allows the paint to dry so that thick drips run down the objects. The resulting patterns and textures reinterpret the forms and re-contextualize them within a discourse of concealment and preservation. “Painting them this way, in what has evolved to become this absurd signature style of dipping, reasserts my individuality on them for a moment before being reborn as everyone’s again. It’s just a way of saying ‘I am here’” Bradford’s paint-dunked works are commentaries on the use of these objects, their meanings, and the role they play in everyday life.
