About Shane Tolbert

Shane Tolbert challenges the traditional limitations of painting, expanding the array of materials and means with which one paints a picture. Employing materials as varied as acrylic paint, plaster, bleach, and Mylar, Tolbert’s abstract paintings exhibit a studied attention to process and materiality. The artist relies on a DIY transfer method, using plastic as a base to load his materials, which he then prints and transfers onto canvases in a process evocative of screen printing. Tolbert’s technique mechanizes the act of painting yet also emphasizes uniqueness. Although recognizable forms such as coins or targets appear in his work, Tolbert’s focus is on process; he is interested in the way paintings are produced and how different materials yield distinctive colors and textures.
