The mountain gorilla of Africa is described as being a gentle and peaceful animal. The female has a single offspring every four years. A baby gorilla, like a human infant, is totally dependent on his mother and is cared for until the age of four. The male does not procreate until he reaches the age of fifteen to seventeen years. The species is protective of the group and form strong attachments to one another. The African mountain gorilla is fast becoming extinct, man being the only predator.
