180 South

Shepard Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1970. He pursued his studies at the Idyllwild Arts Academy and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Art and Design in Illustration. Fairey founded design agency Studio Number One in 2003 and was a founding partner of BLK/MRKT Inc. from 1997 to 2003. Arguably his most famous, and most controversial work, was the 2008 presidential campaign poster for Barack Obama entitled 'HOPE', that was later used as the cover of TIME Magazine's 2008 Person of the Year issue. The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston held Fairey's first retrospective 'Supply & Demand' in 2009. Fairey's work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Fairey lives and works in Los Angeles.

About Shepard Fairey

Expanding on the legacies of artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey’s practice disrupts the distinction between fine and commercial art. A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of posters, stickers, and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon. Fairey’s iconic poster of President Barack Obama was adopted as the official emblem associated with the presidential campaign and encapsulates a number of recurring concerns in the artist’s work, including propaganda, portraiture, and political power.
