A sky heavy with thick, darkening clouds presses down on distant charcoal hills, pale green orchard, white ground and foreground brush and rock in this three feet wide encaustic on wood panel. This wax based medium creates a textured surface that draws the viewer in to examine the emotive process of making. This painting has a thin aluminum frame. Encaustic is an ancient medium employed by the Greeks and Romans in the first centuries AD in painting portraits and decorative panels. Encaustic that is melted before application relies on speed and timing in its use. Andrew graduated with his MFA from Newcastle University in northeast England. He has exhibited widely with 27 solo shows in the UK and Canada. He has received two Ontario Arts Council awards and won landscape competitions including the Laing National Landscape Competition and the Lawrence Atwell Award both in the UK. Andrew's work is in corporate, public and private collections including that of actor Mel Gibson and Her Majesty The Queen in Right. His work was featured on the cover of the Canadian band Tragically Hip.
