About Simon Casson
Simon Casson combines a range of styles and images in paintings that resemble colorful oil collages. Creating mashups of classic figure painting and expressionistic brushwork, Casson will overlay a female nude with lashings of abstract color or the gestural strokes of a painted sky, or splice up a still life with the image of a tempestuous sea. Drawing from the Western realist tradition, Casson interrupts the precise, formal renderings of figures with the looser brushwork of modernism, obstructing the thread of any suggested narrative. Casson’s cut-up approach to painting has been described as espousing a sort of punk-baroque aesthetic.
