About Simon Gush

Lacking a specific style or preferred medium, South African artist Simon Gush works with multimedia, performance, photography, and found objects. His practice is primarily research driven; he derives inspiration from texts, film, classical music, and popular culture. “My interest is in facilitating and constructing a way of speaking around politics and how we live as a society,” he has said. “For me, there is a lot of space for different kinds of investigation, and my practice has always been linked to a feeling of responsibility to be part of or to stimulate some dialogue.” Gush first appropriates, then reconfigures objects and experiences from everyday life as prompts to reflect on the way in which power and politics operate through the quotidian.
