Eschewing a defining style, designer Simon Hasan situates his work between ancient craft and modern industry. Describing his practice as “design archaeology”, Hasan uses research of historic craftsmanship to fuel his hands-on experimentation with materials—as in his trademark pieces (chairs, stools, lamps, tableware) made with boiled, almost-sculpted leather. “I think craft is the future of design and design is the future of craft,” he says. “They both need each other.” His works often juxtapose the organic shapes of his molded leather against clean, industrial materials like wood, metal, and glass.
