Solamalay Namasivayam, an artist and educator who died in 2013 at the age of 87, was a pioneering figure in Singaporean figurative art. Namasivayam was a founding member of the Singaporean art collective Group 90, which prized the classical tradition of drawing from live models and organized life drawing sessions to create opportunities for others to study the craft. This was a time in Singapore when it was hard to find people willing to pose nude, and many of Namasivayam’s hired models were visitors or travelling backpackers. The artist executed his work in a variety of mediums, from drawing with pastel and charcoal to painting with acrylic and gouache. A devoted educator, Namasivayam spent 20 years lecturing at the National Institute of Education. His work is found in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum and other collections around the world.
