The brooch is hand-cut and constructed from steel and then lacquered.
In the work in Shadow Themes, I return to social identity and psychological states expressed through jewelry. In earlier series like ‘Anthophobia’, 2007 or ‘FTD’s’ 2009, medicinal botanical forms were the allusion to psychological states of the wearer. They were hollow constructed brooches which incorporated botanicals which for treating anxiety/depression, etc. while the silhouette shapes from traditional flower corsages- made reference to the role of adornment in portraying identity in social occasions. I suspect the fact my father was a pharmacist and my mother was a therapist may have influenced these preoccupations…
In the new series the psychological reference is made more resonant in the bilaterally-symmetrical composition and color reference of Rorschach test inkblots.
Another recurrent theme is the private and public aspect of identity- which has so much opportunity in the format of jewelry. The elaborate structures on the back sides of the pieces in the Rorschach Corsage series are inspired by the emotional states we do not proclaim in public, while the front surface reflects a more publicly presented persona. And as in life, sometimes they escape their socially prescribed location.
