Soo Kim carves and slices her photographs to create delicate, almost sculptural works that bridge the divide between 2-D and 3-D. In works like (In a natural tone) (2011), she excises branches from photographs of trees, gilding them with metallic paint and twisting them into complexly beautiful compositions. Other works play with architecture, as in (Trying to pull her away) (2011), where Kim carves out building walls from a photograph of Dubrovnik, giving the town a sense of uncanny ephemerality but also suggesting an underlying gridded rhythm to the cityscape.
